The Joy of Texts

Sorry for the unoriginal title. This is a discussion of when texting is appropriate and when not.

Is texting appropriate in the following situations?

1. You're running late for an appointment.
2. To ask somebody whether they are free on such and such a date
3. To update somebody on your mood
4. To ask someone to marry you
5. To dump someone

Answers:

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes
4. Duh
5. Maybe

Comments are welcome. I think the only contentious one is 2. I will supply the reasons later...

I'd swap (2) and (3). Checking if a date is convenient is fine by me, but I guess you have a good reason lined up.
Regarding 3, that's very selfish. There's no dialog there. If you call someone, ok, you're looking for feedback or support. But if you just text "im feelin blu", what kind of answer do you expect to get back?

1. Agree

2. There is one major downfall with this one. As someone of the female gender, I will disclose a top secret explanation (which I'm pretty sure is more or less equivalent amongst the male species) - the almighty "I didn't see/I only just saw your text" excuse. When a person tries to arrange an "event" via text, there is always the probability that the text receiver does not want to attend said "event"; hence, they may wait a while before replying, in order to think of a tactful reason/excuse (this is the difference between both genders, as guys don't always do this tactfully). Organising an "event" via text, or email for that matter, is sterile - it's difficult to sense the tone of the other person. Now, if you were to try and organise an "event" over the phone, you may be able to sense whether the person is game or not, but then again, there's always the "hang on, let me check my diary, and and I'll call you back" excuse too.

3. Yeah, I think the It-meister covered the reason for this quite well...although the desired reply may be "Oh no! What's wrong?", ergo dialogue would commence.

4. I guess it'd be alright if the text were to say something along the lines of "I luv u & jst wntd u 2 kno that I put sumfin metal & circular in ur cake. plz dn't choke on it - it was quite xpensiv & I hd 2 wrk xtra shifts @ the cafe. lol x :P "

5. To dump someone? To dumb someone?! Please refer to this clip which, in my mind, is just as bad as text-dumping: http://bit.ly/R78Hg (start watching from 1:15 - I wasn't an avid viewer of this show, but this episode did catch my eye)

Thanks for reminding me, It. Well, I'm a bit disappointed with the response, thought this would be something that people would be interested in discussing. Well, actually, texting is not a good communication medium *for me at the moment*. Reason: I don't have a contract, so every text costs me at least 10p. Also, my text inbox is not the kind of place one wants to hang around, so if I can't respond then and there, don't expect an answer. Also, it's a really difficult way to type.

It's 1 in the morning and all I can say is, no texts please, we're British.
